Blocked domains

Blocking a domain blocks its subdomains too. Apps load from several domains, so the presets include the ones each app needs.

Use Slab in Safari, not as a Home Screen app. iPhone keeps Home Screen web apps' data separate from Safari, and your NFC tag always opens Safari. Slab blocks at the network level: apps still open but their feeds won't load, so force-close them after bricking. You can always remove the profile in Settings. The point is the friction.

Welcome to Slab

Setup takes about 5 minutes and only happens once. After that, Slab only asks again if something stops working.

Install the profile

This sends your phone's DNS through your NextDNS blocklist.

  1. Tap Allow when Safari asks.
  2. Open Settings › Profile Downloaded › Install.
  3. Settings › General › VPN & Device Management › DNS › choose Slab.
  4. Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Private Relay: Off.
  5. Come back here. Slab checks automatically.

Add the shortcuts

These switch your blocklist on and off. Your ID and key are already in them.

  1. Tap each button above, then Download.
  2. Open Safari's Downloads (↓ in the address bar) and tap each file, then Add Shortcut. Keep the names exactly as they are.
  3. Come back and tap Test shortcuts. When asked, choose Always Allow for api.nextdns.io.

Set up your tag

Any NTAG215 sticker or card works. Put it somewhere away from where you use your phone.

  1. Copy your tag link:
  2. Shortcuts › Automation › + › NFC › Scan, then hold the tag to your phone.
  3. Choose Run Immediately. Add the Open URLs action and paste the link.
  4. Tap the tag now to test it.

Tap the slab or your tag to brick. Only your tag (or an emergency unbrick) can unbrick you. If anything stops working, Slab will tell you.
